Am i alone in feeling that 'glee' is one of the most annoying pieces of television ever created?

A Year Come and Gone, another approaches, A show on Dec 10th

To all who share a thirst for life, love, music and everything in between, This year has been quite a whirlwind; January's Hugh's Room 100th show celebration lead to the new recordings which lead to a ton of gigs and culminated in two incredible east coast tours. I plan on carrying the momentum into 2010 with musical expeditions to Memphis, Nashville, a return to Newfoundland (my new favorite place in Canada), and if all goes according to plan, a cross country tour heading west this summer! Before I say another word, let me wish you all a wonderful and stress free holiday season... its upon us, no sense in denying it! As we walk past endless jingles, tinsel and cheerful decor, I hope we all take the time to connect with loved ones, share a bevy or two, deck the halls, light the candles, dance a jig, and appreciate the break in the monotony! In the meantime, I'd like to invite you out to one final full band show! Haven't played in hometown Tarana in some months, so this Thursday I'm "getting the band back together" and hosting a couple of great maritime artists at C'est What! here are the details: DECEMBER 10th, 2009 Location: C'est What Street: 67 Front Street East City/Town: Toronto, On $6 9:30pm start time, I'm headlining at around 10:30 W/ Mary Stewart http://www.marystewartmusic.com/ David Macmichael (The Danger Bees) Http://www.thedangerbees.com Also On Thursday, December 10th, Second Cup at Empress Walk will host the first ever Sip for a Cause. 100% proceeds from the day's beverage sales will be donated to Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children with cancer. I'm playing a solo set at 1pm, come say hello and have a cup of joe! As we speak, I'm working on the video blogs to commemorate the recently completed "East Side Ride 09" tour w/ the talented Jadea Kelly, I'm going to release them in early January, when the holiday dust settles. In the meantime, check out this one from the "East Bound and Up" Series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-OKxNdD9SI It'll give you an idea of what to expect! Many thanks to all who joined my facebook "fan page," ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dave-Borins/20447603918 ) I say this with a nod and a wink, because I've yet to find a way to distinguish between friend and fan. I hope I never have to! You can be sure I'll be in touch soon, but please drop me a line and let me know how you've been spending your time! Always looking for new music to hear and discover, so send me recommendations! Much Love, see you on Thursday or as soon as possible! db

just achieved a higher symmetry by eating a wagonwheel while listening to wagon wheel! Ahhh so

Birthday in Sackville

Just about to go on for my last set at the bridge street cafe in lovely sackville NB.
Heading home to toronto for a week before my next run of shows! This tour has been amazing, so much to see out east, and we're doing everything we can to really see the places we visit! This has caused us many sleepless nights (back from bar @ 5am, out hiking at 9am etc etc) but the effort has been a success!

Just wanted to thank everyone for the birthday wishes, its tough to be away from home and friends on a birthday, and I think I had my first legitimate bout of homesickness! That being said, with this tour under the belt, my desire to get out on the road for longer stretches to farther places has never been stronger! What a great way to see the earth, but moreso, what a great way to connect with people across the earth! When playing in a strange town, people are all the more curious, and the hospitality we've recieved has been nothing short of spectacular!

Incredible footage from each place we've visited, I'm going to spend a full day in montreal tommorrow editing and processing it! check http://www.youtube.com/daveborins in the coming days to see the latest crazyness!!!!

Having a single malt birthday toast with safedawg before next set, thanks for all the bday wishes, miss you all!

East Bound and UP: Chapter One

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia 4:30am Atlantic time

Once I figure out how to use the editing software, I'll be posting video blogs from the road! Please stay tuned and be patient!

Jordan and I have safely arrived at the Atlantic ocean! Many bugs were unable to avoid destruction at the hands of our windshield! Got here at nearly 2am, and unsuccessfully tried to find an open bar. Instead, we checked out tomorrow's venue and wandered towards a lovely pizza parlor where we gazed lovingly into each other's eyes and talked about our feelings!

First time in Halifax, I'll have lots to write about in chapter two!

Lets back peddle for a second. Technically, this tour started a few days ago. The Czehoski's show in downtown Toronto was a blast! Despite the late start, we had a full room of fans, friends and family to send us off proper!

The band: Blaise Alleyne (violin), Alastair Whitehead (bass), Rich Piasetski (drums), Angie Hilts (vocals and imaginary banjo) and Jordan Safer (harmonica, slide guitar)... I love playing with these guys, and look forward to dragging them all across the country someday (sooner then later)!

T- shirts were sold, wine was spilled, music was played!
Matt Singer, and Great Elk were on tour from Brooklyn and played great sets! My little bro put them up at my family home... the after party nearly broke into a spontaneous game of "risk" but cooler heads prevailed!

I packed through the whole night, although I did take a nap midway through, on top of the various garments that littered my mattress. After such an eventful night, it was well deserved

We left Toronto just before one pm (we had foolishly planned for 10am) and the road became out proverbial oyster!

First night, I stayed with my buddy Cyrus and his lovely lady friend Kat. Not only were they great hosts, but Cyrus spent a couple hours upgrading my mac programs and showing me how little I know about my machine! One day I'll be a shortcut master!

I then took to the town and relived my university days by drinking at my old haunts. Nothing has changed but the patrons; an unfortunate symptom of graduation.

How did I repay the kindness of Kat and Cyrus? I ran off with their spare key which has yet to be of use on the Atlantic coast. Might as well just send it back to them via Canada post!

Safer was a champ on the road today, we arrived in Halifax in under 15 hours, I took the nighttime driving shift! New Brunswick and Quebec are beautiful to drive through, Nova Scotia has a full moon and interesting, bright night clouds... i'm guessing its always like that since the moon has been full 100% of the nights i've spent driving here!

Thanks to Ben Zittell for putting us up! I promise I won't steal your keys!

We've decided that we only want to listen to full albums while driving, none of this shuffle nonsense (god's playlist)

Highlights from today's soundtrack:
Pet Sounds by The Beach boys
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Use Your Illusion 1 - guns and roses
Ashtray Rock - Joel Plaskett
Until The Freeze - The Black Crowes
Arcade Fire - funeral
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust - david bowie
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Reckoning - The Grateful Dead
Chad Van Gaalen - Soft Airplane
Three - Joel Plaskett (we put this on just as we entered the maritimes, a fitting intro to the east, and the PERFECT road trip album)

First Show on the east is @ Bearly's Blues and Ribs, at 6:30, everyone we meet says its a great place to play! Can't wait!

There is no way that the song 'umbrella' is going to encourage shoppers here at mountain co op

Eastbound and UP: East coast tour announcement

reprint from mailing list: email daveborinsmailinglist@gmail.com to sign up

"We were all delighted, we all realized we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one noble function of the time, move."

"Every now and then a clear harmonic cry gave new suggestions of a tune that would someday be the only tune in the world and would raise men's souls to joy."

- Jack Kerouac, On the Road

Well folks,
the time has come, I'm hitting the road. I've done a lot of "boomerang gigs" in places not so far off, but this is different;
Its a road trip, a concert tour, and an adventure all rolled into one. Its as though I've reached the next logical step, and hopefully this is first of an endless string of tours of all shapes and sizes. How can I call myself a Canadian performing artist if I haven't covered the land from coast to coast? To me, music is the spouse of discovery, I intend to nurture that relationship on this road.

The venues are small, the distances are long, but the music will be spreading! I'm sure I'll have a million ideas of how to improve the next time around, but that's the point! The first step leads to the second and so forth we walk!

I plan on blogging almost every day, and we're bringing a digital video camera to record music and experiences along the way. Everything will be updated on my blog "songwriting, etc.": http://daveborins.blogspot.com/

I'll be travelling with the talented Guitarist/ harmonica player Jordan Safer (urban preacher, Julian Fauth), who has been an instrumental force in booking the tour, and helping out in all ways necessary! His commitment was a major catalyst!

The east coast tour will stretch from Toronto to Newfoundland, and back through Montreal and Ottawa. I haven't been on the Canadian east coast since I was a uber wee lad, and I intend to explore as thoroughly as time permits. We've got a rest day scheduled in Gros Morne National Park, Jordan is going to be dragged up a mountain, I've yet to break this to him, but he's got no choice!

I would love to hear from people who have visited or have lived in these places.... please give me a line on any good local music, food, hikes, people, scenes etc etc.
I intend to really travel and these spots, as opposed to blowing through without full experiencing the various locations. This tour is about discovering my homeland, that's why we're heading all the way east, then all the way west in November, stay tuned for those dates!

* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ACOUSTIC ROCK'N' ROLL - DAVE BORINS EAST COAST TOUR!!!

ATTN: TORONTO LAUNCH: Sept 03rd @ Czehoski's 678 queen west, set time 11pm... contact for guest list

TORONTO, August 18th, 2009 – After a summer of canoe tripping, music fests and campfire concerts, Toronto-based acoustic roots rocker Dave Borins and harmonica/ slide player Jordan Safer (Urban Preacher) will tour across Canada from sea to shining sea.

With the onstage energy of Neil Young and Joel Plaskett, the humor of Louden Wainwright, and the wisdom of Townes Van Zandt, Borins has been been gaining a lot of attention. Based in Toronto, he was nominated for "Best Live Acoustic Performer" and "Best Folk Artist" at the 2008 "Toronto Indie Music Awards." He has played to sold out audiences in NY city, and all over Southern Ontario. His 100th show was celebrated in 2009 with a sell out Debut at Toronto's storied "Hugh's Room."

Launching in September 2009, the four-month music and media tour will promote Borins’ EP entitled “Lucky Ones” and mark Dave’s first set of performances east of Quebec and west of Ontario.

"how can I call myself a Canadian performing artist if I haven't covered the land from coast to coast? To me, music is the spouse of discovery, I intend to nurture that relationship on this road. that's why we're taking the time to stop in national parks, and sleep in the houses of strangers."

- dave borins

Throughout the tour, Borins will be keeping an updated blog, follow his journey: http://daveborins.blogspot.com/

The East coast leg kicks off in Toronto on September 3rd 2009 at czehoski's.

Borins will hit the following eastern stages:

Sept 3rd Czehoski's Toronto, ON.

Sept 6th Bearly's House of Blues Halifax, NS

Sept 8th The Grapevine Argentia, NL

Sept 9th CBTG's St Johns, NL

Sept 10th Whalen's Pub St Johns, NL

Sept 11th Whalen's Pub St Johns, NL

Sept 12th The Bar Room Cornerbrook, NL

Sept 14th Plan B Moncton, NB

Sept 15th Bridge st. Cafe Sackville, NB (Dave's birthday show)

Sept 24th The Rainbow Room Ottawa, ON

Sept 25th The Green Room Montreal, QC

Look for Dave’s new EP “The Lucky Ones”, available for preview on his Myspace page, and for sale on Itunes. The west coast leg of the tour is set for November, and dates are still being finalized. If you are interested in booking Dave, please email daveborinsbooking@gmail.com

"The
Lucky Ones, a five-song EP, fuses the warmth of late 60's Island Record
releases with a modern country/roots flair. Sometimes jaunty, sometimes
melancholy, but always familiar..... a testament to his ease on the
stage and command of the space. No studio is needed to weave Borins'
magic; he's got it naturally." - Lucid Forge - Canadian Arts and Entertainment Mag

thoughts on the Wabakimi canoe trip

My sleep patterns are quite erratic! When i get an excited buzz, slumber is simply not an option! I played my post canoe trip concert this evening, the show was a ton of fun, and I still feel the energy despite it being nearly 7am! We cannot choose our productive hours, therefore I'd like to use these wee hours to muse about the canoe trip I was on these last couple weeks!

The vastness and remoteness of our trip was emphasized by the 18 hour drive to the town of Armstrong Ontario. A tiny community near a first nations reserve

Armstrong was our launching point, and the jumbo burger at E and J's served as the talisman that marked both the start and conclusion of our wilderness journey!

On the road to Armstrong, we viewed wildlife in abundance, wolves, moose, bears and foxes all seemed to wave as we passed... in the park, all we saw were various vicious types of flies, half a dozen uncomfortable but ultimately delicious fish, and a ton of bald eagles... who knew Canada's wilderness was home to so many of these
imperialistic emblems? Who knew large forest dwelling mammals liked to tease us by showing up only while we moved past at 100km/hr?

My companions, Adam Haller, Rob Trager and Handsome Hartland Jackson, and I turned out
to be a perfect foursome! nary a fight unfolded and many a song was sung!

Top 3 car songs (we played these tunes on
the hour, every hour to stay awake during our nonstop red eye home
1) Fashionable People (Joel Plaskett Emergency from the album Ashtray Rock)

2) Wagon Wheel (by the old crow medicine show)
3) Rolling Rolling Rolling (Joel Plaskett from "three")
I was obsessed with Joel Plaskett the whole time because I recently saw him play at mariposa and was blown away!

Rob's Ford escape had satellite radio, it kept us entertained ... as did candy

The weather in percentages:
80% rain
60% wind in our faces, 30% at our backs, 10% none to speak of
battling the headwind on the largest lakes for three days straight was a serious kick in the rear! That being said, we did have two great days sailing:

Perhaps the highlight of our trip was meeting some wonderful folk from Indiana! They were so curious about our tarp sailboat rig that they invited us over to their lodge! they'd been flown in for the week by sea plane! Since they were leaving the following day, it was necessary for us to help them finish their cold beer! Things escalated till we decided to pitch our camp next to their cabin, and we had a good ole fashioned fish fry! The meal consisted of baked beans, string beans and gravy, enough fried fish to clog an artery, mashed taters, biscuits and many
many cans of beer!

I brought out my guitalele and sang em a bunch of tunes, it was a full on hootenanny! We
learned
about hunting, metallurgy (they turned out to be elevator/ weapons manufacturers) football, F1 racing and about life in Brazil, Indiana! More hospitable people I could not have imagined! They even inspired us to catch some fish for our own dinner on subsequent nights! Even Rob's twenty buck Canadian tire rod was proficient at catching huge fish in those plentiful "honey holes." When I'm old and fishing with my children, i shall recognize this experience as being the week that I finally "got" fishing!

Perhaps the most beautiful part of our trip was the day we reached the Kopka River!
We dropped into a picturesque gorge filled with exposed cliffs and raging waterfalls! Till this point the scenery was vast and beautiful, but not unlike other canoe trip settings like Algonquin. All of a sudden, everything escalated; the portages became more technical, beauty of this river gorge was astounding:

Another highlight for me was sitting round the fire playing music! Singing songs and canoe tripping are different sides of the same coin! Since I began leading trips at various summer camps, I've always brought my Mini ukalele/Guitar (fits right in my pack)! Every night i practiced a few songs, took stabs at writing new ones, and entertained the boys with random pickin!'

at the end of the trip, we took a couple videos of the songs I was working on! Here is "no place to fall" by the late great Townes Van Zandt:

Now we've returned to the real world, had my first show back, and sure enough, our friends from Indiana attended the show @ Czehoski's... we might even go visit them for the Indy 500

All and all, Hart, rob, adam and myself, covered 250km by boat, 3500km by car, suffered no major problems, and had an amazing time!

Next year, in The Nahanni!

As for my music career, stay tuned I've got a lot to announce!!!!

much love to you all, drop me a line asap!

The Global Village, Into The Wild, The Cube Question

Isn't it amazing how quickly winter is forgotten? When the city streets fill with sunshine, skin and festivals, everything seems a little more possible!

INTO THE WILD

The centerpiece of my summer will be a lengthy trip to Wabakimi National Park:

If you click this link, you'll realize its a very very long drive, and frankly, after spending most of the past two years running around the cement of Toronto, getting back to the dirt is exactly what I need! My partners in crime (tripper buddies rob, haller and hart) and I will be tripping hard: white water, unmarked trails and portages, massive lakes!  I intend to spend a large chunk of my evenings writing songs, and telling stories round the fire! Wish me luck, I hope I don't get eaten by a caribou.

In addition to this trip, I will be doing my usual round of summer camp touring

balancing the natural w/ the urban is very important to my music and my sanity.

THE CUBE QUESTION

I've been amazed by how many people have asked me about the results of "that cube thing".... so many of you voted, I cannot thank you enough!

I find out the results at a private gala which will take place simultaneously in three canadian cities on June 23. The toronto one is at Circa, and they've asked me to perform a 15 minute set... which is a good sign, but they emphasized that it does not mean I have won!

The Fall Tour is still in the planning stages, but many questions and routes will be answered depending on the outcome of the cube!

Wish me Luck!

Thats enough for now.... as always, check out my twitter, myspace and youtube, itunes!
If you do visit, don't forget to rate me high, this helps increase my visibility!
send the links to friends, and keep coming out to shows.... Your support means everything to me

Be well

Hypercube Media Relase

* For
Immediate Release

From
Toronto to Tofino:

Borins
tours his tunes, one cubic kilometre at a time

TORONTO
— June 21, 2009
Nissan
Canada Inc
.
distributed 50 cube® vehicles to winners of the ‘hypercube’
contest in three ceremonies held in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
The three month social media campaign inspired hundreds of creative
thinkers across Canada to submit their virtual canvasses for judging.
The judges, Greig Nori, Leanne Pelosi and Dustin Rabin, sought out
“cubist-type people” with creative and “awesome”
qualities. Among the winners was acoustic roots rocker, Dave Borins,
who would stop at nothing to “tour his tunes”.

And
that’s no hycubole.

Dave’s
“Hypercube Hyperfest” show at Global Village in Toronto,
in addition to his social media outreach via Facebook, Myspace and
Twitter, garnered the judges’ attention. They saw a dedicated
artist who, like the cube®, is anything but ordinary.

After
releasing his new EP entitled “The Lucky Ones”, Dave was
anxious to share his music with anyone who would listen. His only set
back? No car. Driven, yet carless, Dave saw the ‘hypercube’
contest as an opportunity to mobilize his creativity.

In
November 2009, Borins will hit the road with fellow musician Jordan
Safer (Urban Preacher) for his first west coast tour aptly named
“Hypercube Tour 2009”. The boys will play 19 stages in 21
days, starting in Toronto, Ontario and ending in Tofino, British
Columbia.

Dave
will continue Nissan’s social media campaign with an
interactive blog, where he will post photos and videos from the road.

BORINS TO THE POWER OF 3 (AKA DAVE NEEDS WHEELS)

Before I say anything.... go here and vote EVERYDAY:
http://www.hypercube.ca/en/Canvas.aspx?id=e51aec04-0678-4c4f-aaef-ae3e61ee7194〈=en
ok, now i'll explain:

As some of you might be aware of, I'm working on booking a substantial tour for September! I don't want to make any announcements, because things are speculative at best, but in order for me to pull this off, I need a vehicle. (my parent's van won't work, believe me... I've asked!).

I was contacted about a month ago by some people running an online car launch called hypercube... The Cube happens to be a great touring vehicle... its weird square dimensions are perfect for loading gear!

basically, they are choosing 500 Canadians to compete for 50 cars....
The hypercube folk said they loved "late night hero" and thought I'd have a good chance of winning....
I said "cool" and filled out a profile....
lo and behold, I got chosen as one of the 500...
now all I have to do is make it into the top 50 and the car is mine as long as i'm shameless.... since i am, here goes nothing:

Ladies and gentlemen... I give you.............. THE CUBE:
http://www.hypercube.ca/en/Canvas.aspx?id=e51aec04-0678-4c4f-aaef-ae3e61ee7194〈=en

VOTE FOR ME ONCE EVERYDAY.... make it part of your morning routine, like coffee, sportscenter or cialis

To escalate my cube campaign, I'm hosting a gig called CUBEFEST!
APRIL 29th @ GLOBAL VILLAGE (460 king street west)
NO COVER, show starts at 9:30 pm

If you vote, and email me that you have done so, I will enter your name into a draw!
if I win my new car...my cube and I will be the prize of the draw.... I'll be your designated driver, give you lifts to buy groceries!
If you are out of town, I'll book a gig near you and come visit

here is that link again: http://www.hypercube.ca/en/Canvas.aspx?id=e51aec04-0678-4c4f-aaef-ae3e61ee7194〈=en

Hell, the first person who votes and emails me that they've done so will automatically win a free lift if I win the car... everyone else will be entered into the draw and 10 people will win!

Please help me win... tell your friends.... it'd would make my touring plans almost %90 more logistically possible!

REPOST: It Takes a Village

Welcome to The Borins Blog! I've chosen to start off with reflections on my 100th show... this post was first published on myspace.com/daveborins on Jan 23rd 2009,
from now on, my blog will contain only freshness!

I played a dream tonight!

I dream of being on stage, feeling in unison with a gracious crowd!
Tonight I felt love, tonight I felt hope.

As I walked into the venue, I could tell the establishment was pleased.... the phones had been ringing off the hook, the tickets were nearly gone... they told me each phone call held a sincere enthusiasm... my village was mobilized, ready to absorb a celebration!

All week I'd felt a strange calm, so much preperation, but it never seemed like work... it seemed right... each phone call and email had a purpose... each practice was fruitful, each meeting was joyous! I felt mobilized, organized like never before... This coming from the master of the late night exam cram, the last minute rabbit out of a hat act was never needed.

Walking on stage, I felt a profound sense of relaxation! My excitement was through the roof, this fed the band and the crowd, both of whom completed the circle by sending it back to me tenfold

The band kicked frickin ass:

Robyn Dell'Unto sang like a bird (perfectly sofened my sometimes jagged delivery) http://www.myspace.com/robyndellunto

Jordan Safer wailed on the harp and slide like a man possessed
http://www.myspace.com/urbanpreacher

Blaise Alleyne's violin smoothed out the rough edges and made everything a little more glorious http://blaise.ca/

David Henriques
held down the bass with precision a fortitude... what a producer, so happy to work with him! http://www.hiddentrailmedia.com/

Graydon James' joy was evident in each drumbeat... If I ever needed an energy boost, all I had to do was turn around! http://www.myspace.com/graydonjames

Meher Steinberg nailed every keyboard part without blinking... it was seamless and we'd never even performed together... he recorded on my first disc, but that was over a year ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj7jp-AjbXw

Last but not least, my brother Marc Borins sang harmony like a pro (and a bro) so glad we have such complementary voices http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2173507/filmorate

My 100th show could not have been a success without these amazing talents!

They say it takes a village to raise a child, I feel like my entire village came to Hugh's Room this evening to watch me grow!

Thank you all so much!

db

P.S.
The following people went beyond the call of duty to make this happen, I would like to publicly thank them all:
